HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Huntsville Police shut down Highway 231 starting at Hobbs Island Road, all the way to Whitesburg Bridge for an extended period of time Sunday afternoon.

The southbound lanes were blocked by Huntsville police cruisers around 3 in the afternoon and was not reopened until just before 5 in the evening.

Police say a traffic accident shut down the area.

Officials on the scene say a man’s car broke down in the rightmost lane on the bridge. A pickup truck coming around the bend of the bridge struck him.

It’s unclear if the man was outside his disabled vehicle at the time of impact, but Huntsville Police say HEMSI transported him to Huntsville Hospital with life threatening injuries.
