HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -  A Huntsville man has a hearing today in the case of strangling his elderly neighbor to death.

John Clayton Owen's hearing is set for 9:30 am at the Madison County court house.

He is charged with capital murder in the 2011 death of Doris Richardson.

Authorities say he confessed to burglarizing Richardson's home on Bidawee Drive; however, he says he did not kill her.

Records show there will be a number of things discussed in today's hearing:

  • Motion to suppress (defense motion #26) hearing
  • Motion to bar aggravators not provided to the defense and state’s response to defendant’s motion
  • Discuss possible lesser included offenses
  • Juror Questionnaire
  • Any other matters properly before the court at that time

Online records show Owens has a lengthy list of burglary charges in Madison County.

His trial for the capital murder charge will be early February.
