(CNN) – Convicted murderer Steven Avery has a new attorney.  His conviction for a murder in 2005 is the subject of the recent Netflix documentary series Making a Murderer.

Chicago lawyer Kathleen Zellner announced Friday that her firm will now represent Avery.  She will be assisted by Trica Bushnell, who is the legal director of the Midwest Innocence Project.

Avery’s conviction has been upheld on appeal.

Earlier this week, the White House responded to online petitions asking President Obama to pardon Avery.  The response states that the President cannot pardon State prisoners.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker has already said he will not pardon Avery.
