HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Huntsville City Schools has a few pretty big construction projects taking place, and more will begin soon.
The Academy for Academics and Arts will open in a completely new remodeled building this fall. The theater will be finished by next March.
The new Sonnie Hereford Elementary is on schedule to open this fall. It is being built at 2820 Barbara Drive, the location of the former Terry Heights Elementary School.
McNair Junior High School and Jemison High School are both under construction on the same campus on Pulaski Pike, just north of Stringfield Road. The schools are also scheduled to open this fall. This project is budgeted at $65 million.
Last but not least, construction on the Grissom High School is coming along nicely, according to school officials. The project was originally scheduled to be finished in time for the 2016-2017 school year but it fell behind schedule. The new target date is now fall of 2017.
The new $60 million Grissom High school campus is being built southwest of the Memorial Parkway-Weatherly Road interchange. City leaders say they are excited to see how the school's new location will impact the surrounding area. They hope it brings in more businesses and retail to that stretch of the Parkway.
