TAYLORS, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina sheriff’s deputy has been shot in the head in a shootout with a robbery suspect who was killed.

Greenville County Sheriff Steve Loftis tells local news outlets deputies were called at 1 a.m. Thursday to an apartment in Taylors. After getting no answer at the door, deputies forced their way inside. A man then shot at deputies, hitting one in the head. Another deputy shot at the man, killing him.

The wounded deputy was taken to the hospital for surgery, and Loftis says he’s expected to recover. The sheriff says the deputy has been on the force for several years.

Both deputies involved are on administrative leave while state police investigate, which is standard in officer-involved shootings.

Names of the deputies and suspect haven’t been released.
