ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) - This weekend, some folks in Athens are enjoying their first taste of the Caribbean.

Island Spice opened on Highway 31 this week. It's the first Jamaican restaurant in the city.

Owner Leon Gardner was born in Jamaica. His family now lives in Elkmont and he says he's excited to bring a new menu, and a new experience, to Limestone County.

"By the folks coming inside here and eating, even seeing the pictures on the wall, I hope they'll get to experience Jamaica," said Gardner. "Just by being here, and the music coming through the system, I hope they experience Jamaica, even with the food because the food is the number one part of the culture."

The new restaurant is located between Athens High and Walmart.
