“Suspicious package” at Madison post office determined to be spilled gear oil

MADISON, Ala. (WHNT)- Huntsville Police's bomb squad along with Huntsville Fire's hazmat  team were called out to the Madison Post Office off of Hughes Road to investigate a suspicious package. They said that employees at the post office called for emergency crews after a strange, chemical-like smell filled the building.

At first firefighters thought it could be a gas leak, but after determining that the smell was coming from a package, they called in the bomb squad and hazmat team. The fire departments on scene evacuated the building.

The Huntsville Fire hazmat team determined it was a half-gallon of gear oil that had started leaking.

Madison Police, Huntsville Police, Huntsville Fire and Madison Fire Department all responded to the scene.
