MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) – Discovery Middle School students wanted a chance to personally thank our military members for their service. As an honor-walk led our heroes into the school’s gym on Monday morning, student Dacey Burgess knew how important it was to them to see the respect.

“My father’s a veteran and I’ve been through the deployments when he’s been gone,” Burgess said.

Burgess is grateful Discovery Middle School’s annual Tribute to Heroes gathered many of our country’s best and bravest in one room so she could thank them, even the one she shares a home with.

“I’m thankful, I’m really thankful and getting to see my dad put on that uniform every morning. Its like I’m blessed to be able to say that my dad served and is protecting our country,” Burgess said.

Black Hawk Pilot Lt. Col. Tory Burgess said gathering with those who signed a blank check to the United States is comforting.

“We’ve talked about the units we’ve served and the friends that we’ve made and the friends that we’re not going to be able to see anymore,” Lt. Col. Tory Burgess said.

Under the cheers, band and choir’s performances and grinning are tears; tears for the sacrifices and tears for their brothers and sisters still fighting their own battles within.

“They’re all gathered here and we get to talk to all of them and learn about their experiences,” Burgess said.

To all of our heroes, we thank you and we salute you.
