Tuscaloosa, Ala. (WHNT) - Of all the story lines that will be on display Saturday, a Heisman Trophy showdown is what many will have their eyes on. Most agree LSU Sophomore Leonard Fournette is the favorite through 10 games, but Alabama's Derrick Henry can toss his hat in the ring.
"It's awesome to block for that guy," Ryan Kelly said Monday before practice. Alabama's veteran offensive tackle appreciates the work Henry does beyond just running the ball. "He's going to get it down after down after down and also help out in the pass protection as well. So they have a great running back too but I think ours is pretty good as well."
With all due respect to the job Henry does for Alabama, Fournette's dominance is obvious. He has rushed for 300 more yards than Henry in one less game. Fournette is averaging a jaw dropping 7.7 yards per carry to go along with 15 touchdowns. Les Miles knows he has to give his back a chance to shine on this stage, but that will come as part of the Tigers typical game plan.
"Really just run the plays that we call and he will have every opportunity to achieve at the highest level. Certainly the greatest credential of a Heisman trophy candidate is a very successful team," Miles said Monday.
The country will be watching to see who seizes the moment Saturday at 7:00 inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. You can watch the game right here on WHNT.
