DECATUR, Ala. – Decatur Utilities is warning customers of a scam happening right now in the area. Managers say the scammers are using a fake online payment system to steal banking information.

The utility company advises customers who receive calls from anyone claiming to be with Decatur Utilities to hang up on the caller. Managers then want you to call the main customer service number to verify your account. That phone number is  256-552-1400.

“Our legitimate online payment system is accessed only through the Decatur Utilities website,” said Kim Baker, DU’s customer service manager. “If customers are directed to ANY other payment website, it is a scam and not associated with Decatur Utilities. If you have any doubts, please call us at 256-552-1400 and we’ll be glad to assist you.”

Ms. Baker said a DU customer recently fell victim to the online payment scam, provided her checking account information and soon found her account had been emptied.
