Police arrest man in woman’s murder in south Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Huntsville Police say a 41-year-old man is charged with the murder of his girlfriend.

William Lewis Payton is charged in the death of Tonya Lynn Amerson, whose body was found early Friday morning behind the Valley Bend Shopping Center on Carl T. Jones Drive.

Police said Amerson was killed at Payton's apartment on Mahogony Row, then her body was dumped behind the shopping center.

No official cause of death has been released and police said the investigation continues.

Amerson's family has set up a fund at Redstone Federal Credit Union and launched a GoFundMe page to accept donations to aid with her final expenses.
