MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) - The last three weeks for the Richardson family have been overwhelming.

"It's sad, but it's heartwarming at the same time," said Charlie Richardson.

Earlier this month, the longtime owner announced the closing of the Richland Golf Center, citing rising property rent. Since then, the pro shop has been flooded with well wishes and tearful goodbyes.

"We've had more people come by and tell us that they're going to miss us and tell us how much they love us," said Richardson. "It's been uplifting to know what we did meant to the community.

He and his family spent the last 14 years trying to make golf accessible to folks in Madison County and beyond.

"We wanted to open up a facility that was affordable to everybody, that was open to everybody," Richardson said. "Golf's got a reputation of being stuffy and controlled. We wanted to open it up to more players and people and that was the whole premise for the golf center."

The center catered to more than 250 members and taught hundreds of students about the game. It also served as a practice facility for many of the high school golf teams throughout the area.

But more than that, it served the community, sponsoring dozens of teams and events throughout the county and providing inspiring messages on its memorable sign along the Memorial Parkway.

"It's been very gratifying what we've done and how we've done it," said Richardson. "We tried to be classy with the way we ran things and help the community."

The Richland Golf Center will close its doors at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

As for Richardson, he said his family's future plans are still uncertain, but he will keep folks up-to-date on both the center's website and email list.
