HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – The sweet smell of chili filled downtown Huntsville during the Mercury Rising Chili Fest on Saturday.

The second annual event is organized by Leadership Huntsville-Madison County and sponsored by First Bank.

Throughout the morning and afternoon, 20 teams competed for the title of ‘The Best Chili in North Alabama.’

Aside from the chili, visitors enjoyed live music, craft beer and children’s activities.

For the competitors, they relied on what makes their recipe special.

Chili Cooker David Little told us, “I try to make a chili the type of chili that you have at home. It doesn’t have much weird spices and craziness in it, just good old-fashioned chili.”

Leadership Huntsville-Madison County is a local nonprofit whose mission is to identify, educate and inspire community leaders to give back.

All money raised today goes back to the organization to support community programs.

WHNT News 19’s team took second place in Open category, and first place in the ICS (International Chili Society) category. We’re proud of you — way to go!
