HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - A couple's journey to a lunch date became the scene of an accident Saturday afternoon in Huntsville. They were involved in a wreck that sent them both to the hospital.  They lost their only mode of transportation, too.

"It's been trying," said Wendy Alexander. "This month has been really trying."

Police say the Alexanders swerved on their motorscooter to avoid an oncoming car.  Witnesses stopped to help the couple, and said the car didn't stop at the red light at Monroe Street and Church Street.

"We got here, we got the green light as soon as we got to the intersection... all I saw was a flash of green," Alexander explained.

The couple found themselves on the pavement at that downtown intersection.

"I was so stunned and I remember I was sitting there holding Sidney's hand and I was trying to keep from bleeding all over the pavement.  I was in shock and I could hear both voices," Wendy said.

Those voices belonged to a woman who began directing traffic and a man who started snapping pictures of the incident.

The crash left them both with bruised bones and scraped skin, and without their only means of transportation.

"As far as we know, it's totaled," Alexander said.  "We were just starting looking for houses, we're working with Priority Vets and he is a veteran. Now without the scooter, we can't even look for houses because we're on foot."

With only the clothes on their backs, they called WHNT News 19 to spread the word and show gratitude for those who stopped.

"With them coming to our aid, being there and staying their until police and EMTs arrived... thank you," Alexander said.

If you would like to help Sidney and Wendy with another means of transportation, you can send a check made out to the couple at First Stop, Inc.
