TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (WHNT) - The Tuscumbia school district and all the schools within it are now AdvancED accredited, an accomplishment to start the year right for new Superintendent Darryl Aikerson.

"As a new superintendent it means so much to me that our district is accredited," Aikerson said. "That means that our students will be graduating from an accredited high school and also that our school system is accredited."

Aikerson said his board members, as well as countless faculty and staff, worked very hard during the state accreditation visit back in March. Accreditation means the school district has met the rigorous standards of AdvancED in areas like teaching and learning, school governance and fiscal management. It lasts through 2020.

"It shows that our teachers and our staff have worked really hard to see this day come. I'm really proud of the hard work that everyone has done."

Aikerson is also very proud of the students of Deshler High School; three of whom scored perfect scored on advanced placement testing last spring. That's a first for the school district.
