MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) - We went out and visited with the Chicago style hot dog stand back in 2010, but at the time, Hot Doggin was battling the elements. We caught them battling their umbrella on a windy day.
Now in 2015, their umbrella sits relatively undisturbed under an awning across the street from their old stand.
Owner Steve Middlebrooks sums it up, "Long story short, we were able to open up this hot dog establishment May 1st, and we're doing well!"
Their store shows their philosophy, which Middlebrooks boils down to: "Hot dogs are fun!"
Sure, they use Vienna Beef for Chicago style dogs, but this is still a Madison business through and through, right down to the menu.
Middlebrooks highlights one example, "I had a couple come in. I guess they were in their early 80's. They would come in about once a week to our little hot dog cart outside, and they ordered a certain type of dog. And we would make it for them. I could hear the lady calling it a 'nasty dog', and I'm like, 'Hey do you care if I put that on the menu and call it the Nasty Dog?' It's one of our top sellers."
Steve and his wife Jessica say a lot of their regulars from their old stand still visit them here. After all, it's only a few hundred feet and a world of difference away.
They also recognize how far they've come from the old stand days.
Steve tells us, "It's really humbling. We feel truly blessed."
Because when you've battled the elements for half-a-decade, Middlebrooks admits, "To come inside, it's almost like a breath of fresh air."
They hope you'll come enjoy it with them.
You can find Hot Doggin on Highway 72 in Madison near Publix, across from Starbucks.
