HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT)-A Huntsville foundation, and dozens of volunteers spent grueling hours in the sun this weekend, in order to help those in need.  "We're passing it along to somebody who would benefit from it, who would enjoy it and would make great use of it," says Caroline Whetham, a volunteer.

Foundation For Tomorrow, Alabama Center for Sustainable Energy, and more than 50 volunteers spent their weekend building tiny homes for homeless individuals in the area.

Founder of Foundations For Tomorrow Nicky Beale says "We picked tiny homes because they are portable, they provide hardened shelter for our homeless so we get them out of the tents, they provide privacy for them and they also provide somewhere for them to lock up their belongings."

One of the tiny houses was built from the trailer up, the other received solar panels for maximum efficiency. "Yesterday morning there was nothing there but a trailer, and a stack of lumber, and in about 8 hours we framed up walls, we put up the walls we cut all the roof trusses and we hung all of those this morning and now it has a roof on it and everything," Adds Whetham,

There aren't any people living in the tiny houses yet, city ordinances don't permit it. "No one has been able to live in them yet because of the city ordinances and stuff, so now we are having some faith based communities who are really giving us the support we need and donating the land to us,"says Beale.

The homes are meant for those transitioning back into society, and after this weekend, the group will have built 3 tiny houses.
