LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell says Ronald Cook, 57, drowned while attempting to get a ski rope off of his boat propeller.

It happened near the Mallard Creek Recreation area, off County Road 400 at around 11 a.m. Saturday morning.

The sheriff says that witnesses saw the boat drift away from Cook, who got tired trying to swim back to it. They say Cook went under, and despite attempts to save him, he drowned.

Mitchell says that investigators are looking into the drowning, but they believe it to be a tragic accident.
