TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WHNT) – The Tuscaloosa Police Department issued a release on Saturday explaining that a person died in their custody Friday evening, leading to an investigation by the Tuscaloosa County Homicide Unit.

According to the release, the police went to the Crescent East Apartments after a caller told them a person who was wanted for Attempting to Elude was on the front porch of a residence there.

The release does not name the person.

Officers say the suspect ran when they showed up, and they chased the person into the woods. They say the person resisted arrest when officers caught up to them. The officers used OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) Spray on the person.

Officers say he continued to struggle, but they got the suspect in handcuffs and walked them out of the woods. Along the way, the suspect collapsed. The release says officers began CPR and called for medical help. The person was taken to the hospital, where they were later declared dead.

The Tuscaloosa County Homicide Unit responded to the scene to begin a death investigation, which the release calls “standard procedure.” The release notes the team of investigators that pick up the case will be made up of supervisors and non-Tuscaloosa Police Investigators.
