UPDATE: 12-year-old girl dies after being struck by lightning in Fort Morgan Sunday

FORT MORGAN, Ala.– A 12-year-old girl has died from her injuries following a lightning strike on the Alabama coast Sunday afternoon.

WKRG reports Megan Nickell is from North Little Rock, Arkansas and was playing volleyball when she was struck. Seven other people were reportedly affected by the lightning strike but were not seriously injured.

A post on the Central Arkansas Christian Schools Facebook page identifies Megan as a 7th grader at the school.

The strike happened around 1:30 p.m. Sunday as thunderstorms were developing in the area.

This marks the 17th lightning death in the U.S. this year, and the third in Alabama; two deaths occurred on June 23 in Opp.
