HAZEL GREEN, Ala. - The bridge on Carriger Road in northern Madison County is still closed, which means a long detour for some drivers. Wednesday, the Madison County Commission declared this an emergency situation in order to speed up repairs.
The bridge is closed because of a hole in the road.
At its meeting, the commission also approved a contract with Miller and Miller Inc., a general contracting company that will repair the bridge. The work is scheduled to take 60 days, longer than previously thought, and will cost $100,450.
Commissioner Roger Jones tells WHNT News 19 the money will have to come from District 1's paving budget.
The Alabama Department of Transportation must still evaluate the planned repair and sign off on the project.
County engineer Richard Grace said other parts of the bridge are showing signs of wear, and ALDOT will evaluate those too. He doesn't expect that those will be part of this emergency repair, though.
