HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - "You never know when you're going to need the service of the American Red Cross," Major Gift Officer Lance Wave said.

Wave and other staff and volunteers with the local chapter of the American Red Cross understand what it means to face a tragic situation.

"I experienced a single family fire years ago and the American Red Cross was the first one on my doorstep with the fire department," Wave said.

"I was in Mississippi when Katrina went through, unfortunately, had a lot of run-ins with natural disaster," Volunteer Samuel Rainkin said.

Now, the American Red Cross needs your help. On Tuesday, June 2 through 3:00 a.m. on June 3, the non-profit organization is asking for donations. All you need to do is log onto their website, https://givingday.redcross.org/.

"We're asking the general population just to give something," Wave said.

This is part of their Giving Day campaign which allows them to continue helping others. Ninety-one cents for each dollar donated helps our local community.

"The way that we track our donations, it's based on your zip code so, whatever zip code you're giving from, your credit card or your debit card, that money is being credited to your local chapter," Wave said.

Finding help from the American Red Cross does not necessarily mean you're a victim of a natural disaster.

"One in six of us are going to be touched by the American Red Cross," Wave said. "Whether we're the ones who taught you how to swim and it saved your life, or if we're the ones who taught you first aid or CPR or someone saved you with CPR."

No, we don't get the choice of when a disaster hits our community, but we do get to choose who our money helps.

"You can designate where you want it," Wave said. "Do you want it to help the military, do you want it to be disaster, do you want it to be blood?"
