LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – The Lawrence County Commission had a painful meeting Tuesday morning.

They listened to county department heads describe how they could just cut 20% of their payroll budget.

Sheriff Gene Mitchell began saying he recommended¬†cutting nine positions, which included for school resource officer’s and other deputy positions.

Revenue Commissioner Tommy Praytor suggested shortening the work week but one day.

Several commissioners insisted this was something they hated to do but was necessary for the county to continue to operate.

The commission has to find $330,000 in order to balance their general fund budget.

Tuesday’s meeting was a workshop so no official action was taken.

The commission meets Friday, May 22nd at 10 a.m. to vote on the moves.
