HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT)--  Before Calhoun Community College's graduation Friday night, WHNT News 19 caught up with the school's president James Klauber.

We met with him on the Huntsville campus, where the site is being prepped for work on a new building, part of a construction and renovation project set to take the campus to new heights.

The new building will be for STEM disciplines, explained Klauber.

"We need to make sure we are producing people who can move on into bachelor degree programs and computer sciences, or the biological sciences to go into work in the industry here," he said.

Plans also include a walkway between the existing building and the new, plus renovating the existing building. Things like creating new offices for Financial Aid and other student advisement services are on the table there.

"We really need more space," Klauber said, adding that he hopes this adds to the collegiate feel of the campus when it's all done.

The project is moving forward, he explained, with bidding for the construction phase to begin within the next few summer months. He said it has to be finished by the Fall of 2016 when students and faculty will begin classes. Until then, it's going to be full steam ahead at the site, he said, which admittedly may be a bit of a headache for students and staff within the next year.

"It's kind of like renovating your kitchen. It's not pleasant," said Klauber, "but the product at the end is going to be well worth the 13 or 14 months they're going to be inconvenienced."
