ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) – Athens Police say one person is in custody after a meth lab exploded inside a motel room early Wednesday morning. Police are looking for another suspect, too.

The owner of the Budget Inn on Highway 31 said he heard the smoke detector go off around 4:45 a.m.  He went to find out what was happening and knocked on the door of Unit 123, where there had been an explosion.

A man answered the door, and the owner immediately saw the room was filled with smoke.  The man said he had been cooking hamburgers, but the owner didn’t believe him so he called police.

Police came and arrested one person.  They are looking for a second person.

The owner said he isn’t familiar with the two men. This was the second night of their stay.
