LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – Sheriff Mike Blakely says an argument between a woman’s ex-boyfriend and the woman’s ex-husband ended in gunfire.

Authorities say the shooting happened at a home on Trotters Lane, just off Menefee Road in Athens.

Law enforcement tell us the victim was shot five times and is now in the hospital in critical condition. The alleged shooter is in custody. Friday night deputies identified the suspect as Jason Sparkman, 32, of Huntsville.

Sparkman is charged with first degree assault, and so far his bond has not been set. Deputies say he fired sixteen rounds with a .40 caliber semiautomatic pistol into a vehicle, and struck the victim multiple times, then shot the victim again as he lay on the ground outside of the vehicle.

Law enforcement officers say the victim is a 37-year-old male from East Limestone. He was getting some of his things from an ex-girlfriend’s home. Deputies say that woman is Sparkman’s ex-wife, and the three got into an argument as the victim was leaving her house.
