TENNESSEE VALLEY (WHNT) – We have exciting news to share with you about one of our team members.  Melissa Riopka, morning reporter and anchor, has accepted a new role at our station. Starting Monday, April 20, she will co-anchor WHNT News 19 at 5:00 p.m. with Greg Screws and WHNT News 19 at 6:30 p.m. with Jerry Hayes.

“I feel truly blessed to join Greg Screws and Jerry Hayes on the anchor desk,” said Melissa. “While I have loved helping people get their day started on WHNT News 19 This Morning, working alongside Greg and Jerry is an opportunity I couldn’t pass up!”

“I grew up in the Tennessee Valley and see our jobs here as a responsibility and a privilege. I know they do, too,” she added.

Greg and Jerry echoed her excitement.

“Melissa is a real pro. I’m looking forward, and feel lucky, to anchor with Melissa and Clarissa [McClain],” said Greg. “We look forward to delivering great newscasts to viewers in the Tennessee Valley.”

“She’s one of the hardest working journalists in the Tennessee Valley,” Jerry said. “She cares about the people and the stories we cover. We’re blessed to have her on our team.”

WHNT News 19 Chief Meteorologist Jason Simpson has worked on the anchor desk with Melissa before, at ABC 33/40 in Birmingham.

“I’m excited to be able to work alongside her again,” said Jason. “She’s a great asset, and she will make a big impact in the evenings.”
