Spirit of Athens gains national accreditation

ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) - The Spirit of Athens is celebrating their new national accreditation.

Board members, volunteers and staffers made the announcement Wednesday afternoon, touting that it is one of 7 Main Street programs in Alabama to receive national accreditation.

Spirit of Athens works to promote downtown Athens, the city’s story and community traditions.

They strive to preserve, promote and support downtown Athens for future generations.

Spirit of Athens is a designated Main Street Alabama program that earned national accreditation from the National Main Street Program.

The recognition opens it up to being promoted nationally and assisted in acquiring grants and other resources to make the city even more appealing to visitors and developers.

Spirit of Athens staffers say between June 2014 to January, they did seven renovation projects. There was $329,035 of private investments made in downtown. Ten new businesses opened and 30 new jobs were created.
