HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Huntsville’s Operation Green Team kicked off their citywide Great American Cleanup Day Friday by handing out free trash bags, hot dogs, tomato and cucumber plants at Huntsville City Hall.

The word ‘free’ is usually a good way to draw a crowd, no matter what the situation. Huntsville Green Team used the tactic Friday, but there was a method to the madness. City officials hope the free trash bags will increase participation in Saturday’s Great American Cleanup & Beautification Day.

“We’ve already had about 15 neighborhoods actually sign up. So they’re doing everything this weekend, next week and all throughout the month,” explains  Huntsville Landscape Management Director Joy McKee.

She ‘s says if you couldn’t make it out Friday, call Operation Green Team at 256-532-5326 for information on starting a neighborhood cleanup crew.

The free tomato and cucumber plants are part of Mayor Tommy Battle’s “Healthy Huntsville Initiative” to curb obesity.
