Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office involved in shooting; One person killed

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting involving deputies.  One person was killed.

The incident happened Thursday morning outside a home on County Road 249 in the Langtown community.  Shane Watkins, 39, died.

Sheriff Gene Mitchell said Watkins’ family members called the sheriff’s office for help just before 8 a.m. due to a domestic incident.  Two deputies responded.

Sheriff Mitchell said Watkins charged at deputies with a weapon.  Mitchell believed it to be a knife.

The deputies were not hurt.  The State Bureau of Investigations is overseeing the case.

Watkins’ body has been taken to the Alabama Department of Forensics in Huntsville for an autopsy.
