HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - The Von Braun Center opened March 14, 1975 to an opening season that included the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra performing , Holiday on Ice and 5 consecutive sold out shows from the king of rock 'n roll himself. 40 years later, the VBC continues to be a centerpiece of the community.

Wednesday, Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle declared March 2015 Von Braun Center Month in the City of Huntsville in honor of the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Von Braun Center (then called Von Braun Civic Center). The Von Braun Center has undergone several renovations since its initial construction including the addition of North Hall in 1987 and South Hall in 1997. The Propst Arena, Mark C. Smith Concert Hall, and East Hall underwent significant renovations that were completed 2011.

VBC_MusicRun_finalIn recognition of the 40th Anniversary of the opening of the Von Braun Center, the VBC has planned events to engage the public and give them an opportunity to see the entire facility. On March 21, the inaugural Von Braun Music Run will begin at 9am in front of the Center. It will include a 5k run as well as a 1 mile fun run. Live music and entertainment will be highlighted throughout the route. At the finish line, participants and supporters will have a live band and other family friendly activities to enjoy.
