LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) - Traffic is backed up for miles both directions on Interstate 65 because of multiple wrecks.
The snow and ice has caused the cleanup of the wrecks to take longer than usual. State Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency say traffic is being diverted on the shoulder of the road, but it is taking a long time to clear the area.
Athens Police officers began shuttling stranded drivers to emergency shelters Friday evening as drivers started running out of gas Some have decided to just stay in Athens for the night, but hotels are full and many have decided to sleep in their cars until the interstate can be cleared.
Law enforcement agencies across the Tennessee Valley are asking drivers to stay off the roads for the rest of the night. If at all possible, please follow their advice.
