Huntsville, Ala. - (WHNT) The last few seasons have not been up to Butler boys basketball standards. A proud program with six state championships to it's name has slipped in to mediocrity as the clock ticks down to it's final hours. Most expect Butler to close for good this Spring, which would also mean the end to it's athletic programs. Just weeks ago, it looked like the boys basketball team would be ending it's run early as well. The Rebels barely qualified for the 5A state playoffs as a team ten games under 500.

Since then, Butler has figured it out. First upsetting number 7 Madison County in the area round, and then squeaking by Douglas on the road. The Rebels enter the sweet 16 one of the state's so called "Cinderella Stories," and they're wearing a glass slipper for everyone who ever wore green and gold.

"we know where the last senior class, we the last people that's ever going to to play basketball for Butler and we want to make it happen and go as far as we can," senior Michael Roberson said before his team's regional semifinal.

Coach Marcus McCall also feels like the Rebels have an obligation to play their best. "We wanna close it down in the best way possible and a championship is out there. It's well in reach and well within our grasp and we know that with that would be something very special."

UPDATED: Butler defeated Alexandria 73-68 in OT Monday afternoon at Jacksonville State. The Rebels will play Johnson Thursday at 11:00 AM. Johnson is coaches by former Butler Hall of Fame coach Jack Doss who won five state championships with the rebels this decade.
