Inmate dies at Madison County Jail; preliminary autopsy indicates heart attack

MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – The Madison County Sheriff’s office is investigating the death of an inmate. It happened around 5 a.m. on Thursday.

Investigators say officers went to a cell to check on an inmate with a health-related emergency. They found Michael Leon Allison, 62, distressed and lying on his side. Officers administered  CPR, and nurses were called.

Chief Jail Administrator Steve Morrison said officers and healthcare workers tried to help until Huntsville Fire arrived at 5:20 a.m.  HEMSI paramedics took Allison to Huntsville Hospital minutes later.

Allison died at Huntsville Hospital at approximately 6 a.m.   Chief Morrison said preliminary autopsy results show Allison died of a heart attack.

Allison was serving a 179-day sentence for theft of property (shoplifting).  He had been in the Madison County Detention Center since January 5, 2015.
