MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (WHNT) – Surveillance cameras capture a man bursting into a Muscle Shoals cellular phone store on New Year’s Eve, but then the heist took a strange twist.

Three cameras captured the events, and Friday investigators released the video to help catch the man involved.

Muscle Shoals Investigator Kenneth Vess said the man walked up to the front of Verizon Wireless on Avalon Avenue just after 2:30 Wednesday morning and smashed his way in with a sledgehammer.

Once inside, Vess said the burglar headed straight to the back of the store.

“What we think, when he went to the backroom and he didn’t see a large amount of product it looked like he noticed there was a safe and it was locked and went ahead and left without taking any product,” said Vess.

But according to Vess, empty handed the man drove all the way to Madison and hit the Verizon Wireless store there, stealing quite a bit.

Investigator Vess believes someone can look at the still picture and it hopefully helps identify him.

“A lot of times on these surveillance cameras, if you don’t have a whole lot of light the clarity is just not there to make a good identification,” explained Vess.

He was in and out of the store in less than 25 seconds.

But his image will be forever burned onto the hard drives of this surveillance system.

If you recognize the man, or have any information that could help investigators, call the Shoals Area Crime Stoppers tip line at 256-386-8685.

A cash reward is being offered in this case.
