HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – We have a scam warning we want you to be aware of.

Huntsville Utilities says they’ve seen a big jump in scam phone calls using their name.

They want to protect you, but to that, you’ve got to be informed on the tactics.

Here’s what you need to know when you pick up the phone.

Huntsville Utilities Spokesperson Joe Gehrdes explains “The new tactic is someone will contact one of our customers and say they’re from a disconnection department or the payment department or something. We don’t have a disconnection department.”

The scammers play on your fear of losing power during the holidays.

If you do receive a call — turn the tables on them — tell them this.

Gehrdes says, “If you’re contacted by phone by someone claiming to be a Huntsville Utilities representative, hang up the phone and call us. We’ll verify.”

The bad things is if you fall for the scam there is nothing that Huntsville Utilities can do.

The spokesperson did tell us that most people don’t fall for it, but they want to improve that so they can say “No One” falls for it.
