HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – AAA Alabama says we'll see the highest volume of Thanksgiving travelers in seven years. Huntsville International Airport is also preparing for more traffic this week.

Many of us are looking forward to a few days of rest and relaxation with our families for Thanksgiving. But, if you're one of the 24.6 million Americans planning to fly to your destination, getting there can cause quite a headache.

"Passenger traffic is up at Huntsville International Airport for 2014, nationally its up as well, so it is trending up and people are flying more," said Huntsville International Airport Director of Business Development Barbie Peek.

More travelers mean more lines and more waiting, but Peek says making holiday travel easier starts with preparing before you even leave home.

"Always give yourself plenty of time, don't underestimate getting to the airport and whipping through check in and TSA so if you're going on a domestic flight we encourage you to always get here at a minimum an hour and half prior to that flight," said Peek.

Airport officials say you're probably already holding the best asset for holiday travel in your hand.

"Most airlines have their own apps so if you want to look at their apps to see the status, you can check-in 24 hours in advance, get your boarding passes, download them electronically," said Peek.
