HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – The city’s only Kmart store will close its doors in January, The HuntsvilleTimes/Al.com reported Monday.

The article states the Huntsville Kmart is the only Alabama store that will close.

The store stopped accepting new layaway customers last week, and plans to start a liquidation sale November 2.

WHNT News 19 spoke with City Administrator John Hamilton about the store’s closure on Monday.  He said he isn’t sure what will happen to the property next, but said developers are eyeing it.

“It was our understanding that property is ripe for redevelopment and we would expect, hopefully in the near future, an announcement on exactly what will go in behind the Kmart,” said Hamilton.

Don’t worry Chad & Downtown, Inc. will have a plan for yet-another-retail-closure here in “metro-Huntsville”…

Prime location for another low-end furniture store that open’s for a year, and then has that on-going 2 year liquidation/going-out-of-business sale.

Snake, you are so right. It does seem like there is a “furniture liquidation” going out of business sale that lasts for 2 years. That was a great comment!
