HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Residents now have a brand new place to shop in Huntsville. Walmart employees and city leaders held a grand opening celebration at 7:30 a.m. for the new store on South Memorial Parkway.
A company-issued news release states the new location created 85 jobs, full-time and part-time. That puts the total number of employees at the new Walmart location to 300.
The new location, at 3031 Memorial Parkway Southwest, is actually the relocation of another store at 2900 South Memorial Parkway.
The celebration is expected to include the presentations of $7,000 in grants from Walmart to local community groups.
And officials will explain the company's pledge to fight hunger in America.
Walmart officials say stores in Alabama donated more than 11 million pounds of food in 2013, which is the equivalent of 9.2 million meals.
Officials say Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $21.8 million in fiscal year 2013 in Alabama alone.
There are still more celebrations planned once the store is open.
The store will be the site of a family welcome celebration on Saturday, October 18 with family activities and free food samples from noon to 3:00 p.m.
Shoppers can meet the store manager, who started out as an hourly stock worker in 1995 and moved up the company.
The store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
