HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – After months of planning and construction, the new Belk flagship store opened Wednesday morning at Bridge Street Town Centre in Huntsville.

The ribbon-cutting was at 9:30 a.m. and the store opened at 10:00 a.m.  A huge crowd bustled through the doors, with the first 600 guests receiving free Belk gift cards ranging in value from $5 to $500.

Designer Cynthia Rowley also hosted a fashion show at 11:00 a.m.

The $20 million Belk is a two-level, 170,000 square-foot, free-standing store. The women’s shoe department, alone, is 17,000 square-feet with a reported inventory of 84,000 shoes.

High-end lines can be found throughout the cosmetics, accessories, apparel and home departments.

According to a company news release, the opening has created 150 new jobs. Sixty associates have been transferred from other area Belk stores.

The Bridge Street location replaces the Madison Square Mall store, which was recently closed.

The Belk at Parkway Place Mall will remain open.

Gotta love it when buying your own opening day crowd with $5 “give-me-back-dollars” is the best way to have anyone show up…WalMart’s new store on South memorial will have twice as many show up for free which demonstrates how far America has fallen down in the economic trough.

a new Belk.. how impressing. Not. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts before going out of business.

Indeed you are correct as the EBT crowd was out in force for their $5 “give-me-back-dollars” on the news…which signifies the new store sales will shortly peak and then slide back just as all the other new “BOX” stores are doing here.
