HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Whenever we have situations like the workplace shooting we saw unfold at a Birmingham UPS facility Tuesday, we need to take a moment and reflect on our own plans.

While most of us will never face anything so horrific, considering your response ahead of time could save your life.

Two years ago after continued violence in public settings, Alabama’s Department of Homeland Security created a guide for what you should keep in mind in that kind of situation.

The video sets the tone with appropriate menace and confronts a sad truth.

A narrator reminds us, “Unfortunately, you need to be prepared for the worst.”

But more importantly, the video lays out strategies for you to employ, claiming, “There are three things you could do that make a difference. Run. Hide. Fight.”

The video goes into further detail with each one — explaining how to plan an escape, appropriate places to hide, and when to turn to the last resort of fighting.

You can see the whole video here, but keep in mind, it’s unsettling.
