HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – A man is in critical condition after leading Huntsville Police on a short pursuit.

It started when an officer noticed a U-Haul truck with its lights off near the intersection of Drake Avenue and Triana Boulevard around 1:30 am.

Huntsville Police say they tried to stop the U-Haul, but the driver took off.

In less than a minute, speeds reached over 80 miles-per-hour and police cancelled the chase.

The driver of the U-Haul lost control of the pick up on Drake Avenue.

He took out a utility pole and went down a 30 ft embankment into Pinhook Creek.

The truck then caught on fire.

Officers rushed to the driver and pulled him out.

HEMSI Paramedics along with Huntsville Fire were able to pull the man from the creek and rush him to Huntsville Hospital.

He is in critical condition.

Drake Avenue was closed for over an hour so police could investigate and clear the wreck.

The road is now open.

Authorities say they found a set of several U-Haul keys on the driver.

Officers checked all U-Haul stores after the wreck.

A broken key box was found in the parking lot of a U-Haul center located on 4400 University Drive. Officers also discovered the building had a broken window.

At this time no arrest have been made.

This case is under investigation.
