HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - It's a different kind of summer camp. One where children can sign up to learn lessons in life, and faith. Sponsored by two Huntsville churches, the summer Bible school is aimed at keeping students out of trouble and on a straight path in life. The summer camp based in biblical teachings is open for enrollment. The 2014 Lift program at the Inner City Church of Christ and Mayfair Church is aimed at elementary students.

"What we'll be doing is learning about the Bible and reading comprehension," said Jahnitta Lovejoy with the Inner City Christian Learning Center. "We don't believe these kids will succeed without Jesus and education," said Cindy Rieder, director of the Lift program. For 7th, 8th, and 9th graders, there is the Connect 3 program, teaching the kids to set goals for themselves as they prepare for high school.

"We do college tours, we visit businesses, we have life skills people come in and tell them about different careers," said April Boddie, director of the Connect 3 program.

"When you come from a place where the odds are against you, it's hard to have hope to think that you can be successful," said Evaughna Ammons, who went through both the Lift and Connect 3 programs. "At first I was like, I don't know if I want to be here, because I didn't like talking to other kids, but then I got here and I loved it," said Ammons, a recent graduate of Lee High School. She is now interning with the program that she says sticks with its students. "I think it gives kids hope and the desire to be something better than what they see around them."

"We've seen them bloom into great students and great Christians," said Lovejoy. The 2014 summer program has room for many more and invites the nearby community to take advantage of the assemblies and out-of-town youth groups to keep kids productive during the summer months.

"They are getting bored, idle hands are the devil's workshop so we try to keep them as busy as we can," said Rieder. Lift and Connect 3 run from July 13th - 25th and take place at both Mayfair church and the Inner City Church of Christ. There are still plenty of spots available in both programs.

You are joking. The bible has nothing to offer when it comes to life skills, science or morality.
