BBB warns of Caller ID Spoofing

Caller ID  allows you to identify a caller before you answer your telephone.  Caller ID service, however, is susceptible to fraud. Using a practice known as “caller ID spoofing,” callers can deliberately falsify the telephone number and/or name relayed as the Caller ID information to disguise the identity of the calling party.

Caller ID spoofing scams have been around a long time.  Consumer advocates say they are on the rise once again, targeting local seniors in particular.

The Better Business Bureau want to make sure you stay safe.  If you have questions or concerns, call the BBB at (256) 850-0719.

Today my caller ID indicated a call FROM my phone number… quite a surprise as I stood reading this info from my AT&T land line phone… concerned that their equipment wouldn’t at least be able to recognize a problem. A few other people have had similar calls… My phone ring was erratic and disconnected before hearing or leaving a message. What’s with AT&T?? In May they destroyed 2 days of payment checks received l and sent overdue notices on this month’s bill…with no possible explanation. How helpless we have become… BAP
