HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – A young girl is recovering in a Birmingham hospital after she was hit by a car on Mastin Lake Road Monday morning.

Huntsville Police say just before 9 a.m., a 6-year-old girl ran into the street after a ball. A driver heading east on Mastin Lake Road couldn’t stop in time – hitting the child.

WHNT News 19 spoke with some neighbors and family members who did not want to go on camera. But they said it was a heart-wrenching incident.

Witnesses say the driver was shaken up, crying and upset at the scene. They say the young child seemed to be unconscious for a time, before emergency responders arrived.

WHNT News 19 did speak with the child’s grandfather, who did not want to speak on camera. He says the child was flown to Birmingham. Her mother continues to update him on the young girls condition, and he believes she will be okay.

Huntsville police say the child is still listed in critical condition.
