Viewer Video Documents Too-Close-For-Comfort Tornado Touch Down

ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) - Tennessee Valley weather can be both beautiful and deadly.

While WHNT News 19 encourages you all to stay inside when tornado warnings sound. Safety is a top priority in emergency situations.

But there are always the few who take the opportunity to witness the force of mother nature.

"I got home from work, the storms were starting to get bad, and y'know the first thing to do is look outside," said Michael Mayer, an Athens resident.

Mayer took to his backyard with his camera, rolling just as theĀ first tornado touched down in Athens.

In the video above you can see how close it was to his home. Once they could see debris flying through the air in the distance, he and his son took cover in their home's laundry room.

Mayer's home did not sustain any damage from the storm.
