DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) – An alert motorist noticed smoke coming from a wood-frame home on Old Moulton Road in Decatur late Tuesday morning and dialed 911. A second caller said she feared the elderly resident was still inside.

Decatur firefighters and other responders rushed to the scene to discover the resident was not at home when the fire broke out.

Heavy smoke was pouring from the house as firefighters arrived. Several units fought to control the blaze and managed to save the house. However, the home and it’s contents were heavily damaged by the heat and smoke.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
