Heavy rain moves through the Tennessee Valley early this morning. Thankfully the highest chance of severe weather stays to our south. Periods of moderate to locally heavy rain continues and will taper off through late morning into the early afternoon.

A new tornado watch has been issued for central Alabama which includes Birmingham until 8am. Higher instability remains just to the south of the Tennessee Valley. We only have an outside chance of isolated severe storms mainly south of the Tennessee River later this morning. Things should quiet down later this afternoon.

Here is a look at the probabilities. As you can see, most of the Tennessee Valley isn’t included. Areas to the south including Cullman, Marshall, and DeKalb Counties have a slightly higher chance of severe storms including damaging winds through the morning. For most of us, this will be a heavy rain event. If you have plans to travel south this morning, it might be a good idea to wait until later in the morning or early afternoon to leave.

  • Bottom Line: Heavy rain continues this morning and tapers off this afternoon. The chance of severe thunderstorms is low mainly to our south. It’s not zero, but most of us just stay wet.
