ATTALLA, Ala. (WHNT) – An Etowah County man died after his vehicle hit an 18-wheeler early Monday morning.

Authorities say the crash happened around 2:40 a.m. at mile marker 178 on Interstate 59 in Attalla.  Santos Reyes, 26, of Rainbow City died in the crash.

State troopers say Reyes was driving a vehicle north in the southbound lanes and collided with a southbound tractor-trailer.  Reyes was not wearing a seat belt, and troopers say alcohol may have been a factor.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt.

Authorities diverted traffic heading south on I-59 to Alabama Highway 11.  It got moving again shortly after 9 a.m.  Northbound traffic was not impacted.

Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate the crash.
