SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — CBS station KPIX is reporting a massive fire was burning at a 172-unit apartment building under construction near AT&T Park in San Francisco on Tuesday, which led to the partial collapse of the structure.

The blaze was reported at the the MB360 project, located at the city’s Mission Bay neighborhood, according to a fire dispatcher.

Buildings under construction like this are, “…like a pile of kindling waiting to go up,” said retired San Jose Fire Captain Vincent Scortino.

The fire was reported to be up to five alarms, meaning crews are rushing in from all around the city and neighboring agencies.

Black smoke from the fire was billowing above the area and was widely seen around the Bay Area.

KPIX 5 photographer Joseph Cousins said the fire had spread to more than one building at the site.
